Plan Ahead

Plan ahead for enrichment:

  • Borrow materials from the parish so you can demonstrate a baptism or reserve the church so you can show the font to the students. If a priest or deacon is available, he can demonstrate.
  • Schedule a penance service so that students can go to confession after they've learned about it. Perhaps have a confessor speak ahead of time on his experiences hearing confessions.
  • Invite vocations speakers: married couple, religious/consecrated man and woman, permanent deacon, priest. In many dioceses, vocations directors can help arrange speakers.
  • When you first go over the sacraments, ask students what they've received. If anyone has received one out of the ordinary (perhaps one was seriously ill and received anointing of the sick), perhaps you can ask the student or the parents to speak on their experiences.
  • Before teaching a sacrament students have received, invite students to talk to their parents about it before class. They can even bring in pictures or other mementos (e.g., baptismal candle).
